The Tamiya Blitzer Beetle was their third VW Beetle-based RC car kit and originally released in the early 1990's.
The Blitzer was then re-released by Tamiya in 2011 as part of its drive to meet the demand for retro and nostalgic RC cars.
It is best described as simple, tough and fun.

The original Blitzer Beetle was based on the tub from the Tamiya Falcon and provides for a pretty quick and easy build - work on the basis of a couple of evenings of construction fun and you'll be pretty much there (if you're a fanatical painter, the driver figure may take you a bit longer to get perfect!).
As with all Tamiya kits, the instructions are easy to follow and the parts are superbly well labelled.
The bodyshell is supplied pre-coloured in black but being made out of the same resin as the white Sand Scorcher, you can paint the shell with any colour scheme you like using Tamiya's acrylic spray paints or indeed any car paint.
Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Blitzer Beetle is its incredibly wide stance - it's almost square!
This means when you come to drive it, it's almost impossible to roll on a flat surface despite the inclusion of a powerful 540 type motor but here can be a tendency to bump steer.
A popular modification to counter this bump steer is to fit the front stub axles on opposite sides. The ball ends then end up underneath and just require a readjustment of the tie rods to get the correct toe in.
The wheels supplied with the kit are a vivid orange which really set them off against the black bodywork. Perhaps a little brash from some tastes but those of us who know better think they are the business...
This is a great kit to build in tandem with a youngster as there are some trickier assemblies than you might find in the Grasshopper or Holiday Buggy, but not as tricky as the Sand Scorcher with it's tightly confined tub and many metal parts.
There is an excellent build log on the Tamiya USA website here
The Blitzer Beetle is a super stable RC buggy that will give you hours of pleasure on almost any surface. Capable massive modifications to both the powertrain and suspension, this is a great kit for the tinkerers and budding engineers amongst you.Save
