In 1963, the famous Italian automaker Alfa Romeo announced the Giulia Sprint, a gorgeous coupe which was powered by a 1,570cc DOHC 4-cylinder engine. Designed by Bertone’s Giorgetto Giugiaro, the refined shape of the car’s body featured a unique “stepped” front styling with the traditional Alfa Romeo shield placed at the centre of the grille.
The car had advanced features for its time, including a front double-wishbone, rear trailing arm suspension system and diss brakes at all four wheels and was immensely popular.
Then in 1965, a special competition-use model based on the Giulia Sprint GT, called the Giulia Sprint GTA (“A” meaning “Alleggerita”, the Italian word for lightened) was announced.
True to its name, the GTA’s wings, floors, bonnet and boot lid were made from aluminium, which greatly reduced its weight.
The high performance 115bhp engine featuring cylinder heads with twin spark plugs and larger carburettors was tuned by Autodelta, Alfa Romeo’s competition department, resulting in an increase in output to 170hp.
The GTA achieved many racing successes, including taking the European Touring Car Championship from 1966 to 1969.
Tamiya have taken the car's beautiful body and accurately reproduced it with polycarbonate. The shield-shaped front grille and side mirrors are depicted with metal-plated parts for great scale realism.
The M-06 chassis features a rear-mounted motor with a rear-drive setup giving fabulous traction off the line and features a longitudinally-mounted battery pack, with R/C units positioned on either side for optimum balance and a low centre of gravity.
The 4-wheel double wishbone suspension is equipped with 60D radial tires at the front and 60D super grip tires at the rear.
A 3-piece steering linkage coupled with the medium wheelbase chassis fitment, ensures a nimble handling response.
Eminently upgradeable using Tamiya hop up parts, the Alfa GTA can built into a race winning contender for local club meets both indoors and outdoors.
The Tamiya Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GTA (M-06) stands alongside the Porsche 911RSR and Renault Alpine as a wonderful recreation of an all-time classic car.
